OMG! this morning when i was reading newspaper, guess what advertisment i saw!

SINGTEL IPTV

OMG!!! what a TIME to appear! they must have purposely made it like that! totally cool! i think they are targeting SCV users that are planning to terminate the sports channel, which my dad wants =( .
hmmm but i think u will have to pay more for this freedom... how much more i wont know.

some interesting facts about Singtel IPTV

Q: Can SingTel IPTV work with a StarHub cable modem? Can a StarHub cable modem work with a SingTel IPTV Set-Top Box (STB)?
A: No, the SingTel IPTV service cannot work with the StarHub cable modem. StarHub's cable modem similarly cannot work with the SingTel IPTV STB. SingTel IPTV operates on SingTel's existing fixed telephone network.
(my thought) luckly my singtel telephone jack are near my tv set. hahaha!

Q: How does SingTel IPTV work?
A:The SingTel IPTV service is delivered over the existing SingTel telephone lines in the home and utilises IP set-top boxes (STBs) connected to subscribers' television set. It offers subscribers next-generation TV services that encompasses both Broadcast and Video On-Demand content, coupled with Enhanced Interactive Information services. Subscribers can watch the content on any TV set.

From the phone jack in your home, a splitter will be used to enable one connection to your phone, and another to the ADSL modem(that is if u happened to have singtel boardband)
1) From the ADSL modem, one port will be connected to the STB (that is if u happened to have singtel boardband. if not, SKIP this step! hahahha!)
2) From the STB, the required cables will be connected to the TV set via the audio & video ports (similiar to the connections for a VCR or DVD player)

(my thoughts) total abuse of this new thing in replace of that ULTRA expensive starhub sports channel and still retain my other SCV channels(luckly my SCV contract expire LONG LONG ago and i still wanna retain my Hub Club benefits). but i hope that the singtel STB is on rental basis(like starhub ones) and it provide live telecast TENNIS matches! HEEHEE!

hmmm speaking about the Hub club benefits, this is wat i am planning to do when its close to 07 oct 07.
i will be using all my Hubber points (which as of today i have 3000+ points) in exchange of free 1 month SPORTS CHANNEL scuscription (650 points). that means, with alll my points, i can translate it into a 5 mth free sports channel! HEEHEE! with this, i can watch all 4 grand slam matches this year! YES!!! OMG shiok!

[ya.... i am still ranting about that starhub thingy]

hmmm, did some small research (not really in depth though) on what would be the impact of the price hikes.

[base on TodayOnline]
starhub cable TV started at around 1995. the comapny, Starhub (SH for short) has cough out SGD$600 million(starup cost) to lay the cables around Sg. thats why the government gave SH a 7 year exclusive franchies starting from 1995.

i have also found out that there are roughly about 500,000 subscribers in singapore.

the net profit SH receives was $313million (19% increase form last year)

also, taken into consideration that it purported out US$160million (SGD$ 246.8million) for 3 year exclusive rights to broadcast all EPL matches [which is none of my business. haha!].

to make things simple, let it be that roughly 50% (250,000)of the subscribers subscribed to a plan of 3 basic channels and 1 sports channels.

so if around 10% of these subscribers decide to cancel their sports channels. that will amount to a 25,000x$25=$625,000 profit lost. painful siaz.

hmmm.... wonder it would be a better idea for starhub to GRADUALLY increase the cost of the sprts channels rather then a crazy $10 increase. but too bad it has monopoly for sports channels(unless singtel provides it too)

haiz... what can we dooo siaz.....
